Caribbean Blue Stone Pool Patio and Walkway

This project focused on creating a natural stone poolscape with clean lines, thoughtful transitions, and durable materials. Caribbean Blue natural stone was used throughout the patio, coping, and walkways to create a cohesive look that complements the pool while improving access and flow across a tight site.

Pool Patio Installation

We installed approximately 800 square feet of Caribbean Blue natural stone in a combination of 24 inch by 36 inch and 24 inch by 18 inch pieces. The stone was laid in a running bond pattern, oriented parallel to the short side of the pool for a balanced, intentional layout.

The patio was carried down the left and right sides of the pool, with the back side left open to maintain space and circulation. To avoid long continuous joints, seams were staggered by alternating stone sizes throughout the installation.

Pool Coping Installation

To properly support the natural stone coping, we poured a 1 foot concrete collar around the pool perimeter. We then mortared down 4 foot long, 12 inch deep, and 2 inch tall Caribbean Blue natural stone coping treads.

This method ensures a strong bond and helps prevent movement or settling over time.

Stepping Stone Walkway to Poolscape

We installed a stepping stone walkway using Caribbean Blue natural stone 24 inch by 36 inch pieces leading from the deck area down to the pool patio. The walkway was designed to be approximately 36 inches wide, with an average 8 inch gap between stones.

The path runs parallel to the back deck, squares off toward the outdoor shower, then turns at a 90 degree angle toward the pool behind the deck. The stepping stone walkway continues through the gate and connects directly to the pool patio for seamless access.

Granite Steps and Grade Transitions

To manage elevation changes in the backyard, we installed multiple Woodbury Grey granite steps throughout the walkway.

This included two sets of steps measuring 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep by 7 inches tall along the main path, as well as an additional granite step of the same size installed in front of the shed. These steps help break up the slope and make the space safer and easier to navigate.

Plantings and Landscape Adjustments

We rearranged and transplanted one Western Arborvitae between the shed and fence, aligning it with the existing hedge and spacing it properly for long-term growth. Compost and brown mulch were added to support water retention and plant health.

Additional evergreen trees were planted to introduce a mix of heights, textures, and seasonal interest throughout the landscape.

Lawn, Sod, and Irrigation Repairs

We repaired all disturbed irrigation components and added loam to damaged lawn areas. New lawn areas totaling approximately 4,000 square feet were hydroseeded, extending from the edge of the existing sod around the basketball court.

We also installed approximately 1,500 square feet of Sod-Co Black Beauty sod around the steps, between stepping stones, and throughout surrounding disturbed areas, starting from the back of the house and continuing toward the pool.

Project Challenges and Solutions

The primary challenge on this project was limited site access. Due to the tight layout, both our crew and the pool company coordinated access through a neighboring driveway.

Careful scheduling and coordination allowed the project to move forward efficiently while minimizing disruption to surrounding properties.
