Hillside Pool Renovation and Outdoor Upgrade
This project involved a full backyard transformation on a challenging hillside property. The scope included demolition, grading, drainage, hardscaping, planting, turf installation, and irrigation, all carefully planned to improve function, safety, and long-term performance while protecting the existing lawn and structures.

Demolition and Site Preparation
We began by removing all existing hardscape areas to clear the site for new construction. Existing loam was stripped and stockpiled for reuse later in the project.
During site prep, we investigated the existing irrigation mainline and wiring, then prepared the subgrade for the new patio, turf, and landscape areas. Due to the hillside location, we also created a dedicated construction access road to bring in trucks, materials, and equipment while minimizing damage to the lawn and surrounding areas.
Drainage System Installation
To manage water flow on the hillside, we installed a comprehensive underground drainage system using Schedule 20 piping. Downspouts were tied into the system and directed to a drainage box or daylighted at a lower portion of the property.
Where pipes daylighted, rodent guards were installed to prevent debris and animals from entering the system. Each downspout includes a WYE fitting with a capped cleanout to allow for easy flushing and maintenance. Regular cleanouts are recommended to prevent backups and ensure long-term performance.
Retaining Wall and Pillar Construction
To stabilize the hillside and create usable space, we built a 3 foot tall retaining wall using Unilock Estate Wall in Granite color. The wall spans approximately 78 square feet and is finished with Estate Wall coping in Granite, totaling 26 linear feet.
This structure provides both visual definition and critical grade support for the surrounding landscape and pool area.
Pool Coping and Jumping Rock Installation
We installed Unilock Fullnose coping around the pool to create a smooth, finished edge. To prevent settling, we excavated and poured a 1 foot by 1 foot deep concrete collar around the pool perimeter. The coping was then thin-set to the concrete collar using Ardex mortar, ensuring a strong and lasting bond.
A custom jumping rock was installed near the diving board area to enhance both function and visual appeal.
Artificial Turf Installation
For a clean, low-maintenance surface, we excavated and completed full base preparation before installing artificial turf. In this area, we installed pet-friendly turf with microbial bedding sand designed to help reduce pet odors.
The turf provides a durable, mud-free surface that performs well on the hillside and remains usable throughout the season.
Hillside Planting and Mulch
We supplied and installed new landscape plantings along the back hillside, amending native soils with plant-based compost at each planting location. All beds were finished with 2 to 3 inches of brown mulch to retain moisture and improve soil health.
All plants were double-watered before final cleanup. Ongoing watering is handled by the homeowner based on site conditions and plant needs.
Irrigation System Design and Installation
We designed and installed a full lawn irrigation system engineered for head-to-head coverage and matched precipitation. The system was designed to achieve a minimum of 10 GPM at 55 PSI for efficient and even watering.
Materials included components from Hunter Industries, K-Rain, Irritrol piping, and select Rain Bird fittings for durability and ease of use. We supplied and installed all materials beyond the backflow. The Hunter indoor controller and wireless rain sensor were provided and mounted inside the home or an approved powered structure.
After installation, we adjusted, tested, and programmed the system to water lawn and garden areas based on optimal conditions.
Project Challenges and Solutions
The primary challenge on this project was the steep hillside terrain. To overcome this, we built up the grade where necessary and stabilized the landscape with retaining walls and proper drainage.
We also constructed a temporary access road to safely move equipment and materials across the site while protecting existing lawn areas and minimizing irrigation damage. These measures allowed us to complete the project efficiently without compromising the surrounding property.
